SRW games with best and worst stories

Never played the MKs. Won’t judge them.

Alpha 1 is wildly overrated, it has shit happen with little to no buildup, wastes about half the series on its list, and there are a number of really, really fucking questionable things like “here’s Dragonsaurus like 15 stages in on a Route Split” as well as how late some of the shit comes (why is Great Mazinger so late? Why is there a Zaku II secret like ten stages from the end of a nearly 70 stage game?). Also - admitting you love Alpha 1’s plot but then hating on Z2-1 for being all setup is the height of hypocrisy.

Alpha Gaiden is also a bit overrated, having basically nothing to do with the entire rest of the Alpha series after the first seven stages and not honestly being that compelling to me. It makes use of about as much of its cast list as OE did, with only three of the four new series, some of the Gundams, Getter, and Great Mazinger actually mattering (do not bring up shit like that one time you fight Sharkin after his death in the last game, I do not care.). Braiger is wasted, as it always is. And I don’t like some of how it handled the three series that make up the main plot of the game, which ruins the whole thing.

Alpha 2 is actually alright, but it has a very major issue where after the lead up and events of Stage 25, the game hits a massive slump of much less interesting events until the Fifth Luna drop like thirteen or so stages later. This is especially bad because there’s no reason you had to do that stuff so early in the plot. I’m also really not a fan of the way that all four main characters do very similar events in the first twenty stages, but just differently enough to change a few things... because that doesn’t actually help replayability in my mind. You’re still doing the same things, it’s just that they have minor differences. It’s like that one string of Haruhi episodes applied to NG+.

Alpha 3 is way overrated. The plot goes up and down all over the damn place, the last fifteen or so stages are boring even by SRW standards AND even by the low bar Alpha 2’s boring endgame set. It falls into a lot of Alpha 2’s pitfalls actually, but it makes all new ones, like ignoring a fair amount of the build up in previous Alphas and adding a series which outright goes against some of the themes of Alpha 2’s endgame (I have no problem with SEED in W, and only some minor integration issues with it in J. But goddamn was Alpha 3 not the correct choice to play it straight.). Also, it has a bad case of the “plots we did in the last games are being done again for no reason”, something all the Classics and Alphas did, but they didn’t tend to literally redo entire show plots like Alpha 3 did.

The Compacts have excuse plots. 80% of their plots are “a few people are attacking these places, choose which one you want to kill first”, which is an interesting gameplay thing but doesn’t really work with the plot - they also all have the issues of their backstories being excuses at best and “how the fuck does that work” at worst.. I consider C1 ok (though the Color remake was fucking awful for gameplay reasons), and C2’s main problems are how fucking boring its OG plot are and the absolutely awful last two stages, and C3... god, C3 actively wasted every single one of the shows in it, including the one they were trying to make the central plot of the game. It’s legitimately painful. Adding to that that the OGs were shit in C3 proper...

Impact is a lesson in how to fix a plot, but the problem is that while it did fix a lot of C2’s issues, it also still gets tripped up by the plot structure, didn’t fix the beginning and ending issues, and the OG enemies are still the worst thing this side of the Mucus. Also, some of C2’s absurdities that it didn’t fix stick out even more thanks to the other things being better (how the hell did they take Blazing Epilogue and make it fucking worse?!?). Still, most of the game’s issues are less plot and more the gameplay problems, which it is swamped by.

So much interesting details from all of you, this is exactly what I wanted!

I am eager to start replaying the Alpha series once again, last time I played it I couldn't read much of the story. By reading the replies in this thread I'm also eager to play UX for the first time as it seems to be quite high regarded.

Honestly, the best way for your enjoyment is to just play to your content. SRW was never regarded for its story anyways.

Which is why the commonly agreed to be good SRWs are almost all the ones that have great plots, right?

I would categorize the best stories this way (having played up to UX, but not much of UX):

Top tier: 64, Alpha 1, Alpha Gaiden
Second tier: MX, Alpha 2, Alpha 3, Z, W
Bottom tier: 2, EX, Compact 1-3, Impact, Shin

The rest range from bad to decent.
