Say that SRW featured character classes for each and every mecha
#1
What do you think they would be, and why?

In my case, it's the following:
  • Melee/CQB (e.g. RX-78-2 Gundam, Mobile Suit Gundam)
  • Ranged/Sniping (e.g. the Scopedog, Armored Trooper VOTOMS)
  • Heavy Siege (e.g. Ideon, Space Runaway Ideon)
  • Light Scout (e.g. Nirvash TypeZERO, Eureka Seven)
  • Engineer/Support (e.g. the numerous battleships)

I suppose I'm not helping with the spirit of the thread here, but this does remind me that one of the most interesting aspects of SRW is the lack of rock solid character/unit classes. There's the loose super robot (tanky)/real robot (dodgy) association, but that's about it, and we know how often units don't cleanly fit into one or the other. I suppose that's the interesting thing about having to stuff a bunch of robots with disparate powers that didn't take video game-iness into mind to start with, you end up with more of a toybox of action figures to clank together rather than just fire-monster-beats-ice-monster stuff.

Hmmm, I did make some classifications back then.

"Ok, Amuro and Goshogun stay in the back and snipe the enemies. Everybody else go attack the enemy at melee range! Fa, stay back and repair anyone retreating! Kouji, do try to reach the battle scene before it was over!"

When the enemies are cleared all that's left behind was Mazinger Z since it doesn't have Scrander Jet yet and it only moved 4 squares per turn, hindered by forest and stuffs. XD

But that’s silly, because the only attack Mazinger has that actually requires it to get into melee range is the Scrander Cutter. Everything else is beams, Rays, or solid amunition fired from the body.

Not in the ye olde SRW he isn't. Breast Fire was 1 range. Rocket Punch was 3 range.
And compared to the other robots who has better mobility, Mazinger Z (no JS) tends to get left behind from the action.

I can imagine Kouji screaming, "Hey guys, save some for meeeeeee!"

Yes, I’m aware, but this thread seems to be about classifying units, and Mazinger has barely any actual CQC.

^I classify Kouji as a useless tank who gets left behind then. XD

I vaguely remember thinking Mazinger Z was complete garbage the first time through SRW 4. I usually dumped it by the time Great Mazinger rolled around. I also had a classification system myself going, but I ended up dropping it.

That's why I split the "Super Robot" category into "melee" and "siege", and split the "Real Robot" category into "scout" and "sniper". Because you can have a scout sniper Super Robot and a melee siege Real Robot. And if what you're describing of Mazinger Z is true, it'd probably be a ranged siege artillery unit, rather than a melee siege unit.

I mean, yeah. Reitou Beam and Koshiryoku Beam are beams, Drill Missile and Missile Punch are missiles, Southern Cross Knives are giant shuriken shot from the wings and never used in melee combat, Rocket Punch, Iron Cutter, Daisharin Rocket Punch, and the reinforced version are essentially missiles, Rust Hurricane is a localized wind storm of ionized hydrogen, and Breast Fire is a ray. The only melee move is whatever CQC it does and the Scrander Cutter.

Great Mazinger notably had like four feet/leg blades and two swords though.
