Naito has won the G1 against Kenny in the finals. This is expected especially after Kenny's win over Okada, which guarantees him a title shot anyway. At a press conference, Naito calls out Ishii as his first challenger for the Tokyo Dome briefcase and is openly supporting EVIL's match against Okada.

Worth noting LIJ will be heading over to the UK to headline ROH's War of The Worlds in a 10-man Tag Match against Bullet Club led by Cody. Sanada is also said to be going after the ROH World Title.

Kenny is scheduled to appear in an ROH match in October. It is unknown if he will be defending the IWGP US Belt.

The story so far in NJPW.....

After reforming himself into "El Ingobernable" and forming one of the most popular factions in New Japan, Tetsuya Naito fulfilled his personal goal of headlining this year's Wrestle Kingdom. He however, fell short of defeating Kazuchika Okada. The Rainmaker enters 2018 as still the IWGP Heavyweight Champion, and stretching his record of longest reigning champion of all time.

Chris Jericho debuts in his first match outside the WWE in over 20 years. His hyped match against Kenny Omega did not disappoint as "The Alpha" (his new wrestling nickname) decimates Omega in the No DQ match. Despite this, Omega fought back and managed to retain the IWGP US Heavyweight Championship.

At New Year's Dash, LIJ defeated CHAOS in the 10-man Tag Main Event. Their beatdown on Okada and others post-match sets up the next feud at the upcoming New Beginning shows - Okada vs Sanada; Goto (the new NEVER champion) vs EVIL; and Ospreay (the new Jr. Heavyweight champion) against Hiromu. Naito will also be going to the New Beginning in a grudge match against Jericho.

After losing to Goto and having to shave his head for it, Minoru Suzuki now sets his sights on the IWGP Intercontinental Championship as he challenges a badly injured Hiroshi Tanahashi. The Suzuki-gun defeated the team of Tanahashi, Michael Elgin, and War Machine in an 8-man tag. This is also War Machine's final New Year's Dash as they are leaving NJPW for the WWE.

After 2 straight losses - one against Dalton Castle for the ROH World title, and against Kota Ibushi at Wrestle Kingdom, Cody is determined to cripple Ibushi after he and the Bullet Club defeated Ibushi and Taguchi Japan in the 10-man tag. Omega intervenes, creating friction between him and Cody, as well as bringing back the storyline of him and Ibushi. In an effort to quell tensions, Omega invites Switchblade Jay White to the Bullet Club. White responds by attacking Omega and later announcing he will temporarilty join CHAOS, with the goal of bringing down the Bullet Club before turning his sights into Okada.

Strong Style Evolved will be great, but wtf were they thinking? They sold out in 20 min when tickets sales went live, then way later they decided to announce Rey vs Liger which is an interesting match that would be able to drive tickets sales further... except they can't because no more tickets. Then they announce Golden Lovers vs Bucks? Probably one of the biggest matches NJPW could do right now, and they throw it on a show that sold out ages ago. Makes no sense. They should have chosen a different venue if they wanted to keep announcing matches like this... There was no need from a business POV, they already sold the tickets.

I get the feeling that NJPW wants to prove something based on these announcements

The New Japan brass just aren't confident in having a 10,000 seat venue in the US, evidenced by the fact they still struggle to have a full house 10k seating in Japan as is. Their UK and Australian tours also use smaller venues that have as many seats as Korakuen Hall (about 2000). There's also the fact SSE is set close to Wrestlemania weekend.

That's why we have the 'All In' event later in the year, headed by Cody and the Jacksons, to show New Japan that it is possible to have a full 10k seating in the US. Kenny will be there regardless of the storyline between him and Cody.

On that note, Kenny and Cody will face off at Supercard of Honor in April. Very unusual as it's a ROH event than a New Japan event and is not likely New Japan World will stream Supercard of Honor. I would think that as far as NJPW is concerned, Kenny vs Cody in ROH is "non-canon" and they would have their feud settled either at Dominion or in the G1.

Speaking of ROH, Flip Gordon and Hiromu Takahashi formed a rivalry during Honor Rising and will face off again at the ROH Anniversary Show next week. The Young Bucks and Hangman Page will defend their 6-Man Tag Belts against Christopher Daniels's team, Cody will have match against Matt Taven, and the main event being Dalton Castle vs Jay Lethal for the ROH World Title.

In kayfabe, Kenny will be out of NJPW for most of March due to a neck injury. In reality, he will be touring in ROH. Ibushi meanwhile will face Yoshi-Hashi in the first round of the New Japan Cup in the B-Block. Other 1st Round matches are the following:

A-Block:
Michael Elgin vs Tomohiro Ishii
Juice Robinson vs Yujiro Takahashi
Taichi vs Hiroshi Tanahashi
Bad Luck Fale vs Lance Archer

B-Block:
Yoshi-Hashi vs Kota Ibushi
Tetsuya Naito vs Zack Sabre Jr
Toru Yano vs Davey Boy Smith Jr
Chuckie T vs Sanada

Predictions indicate Ishii will win the tournament and, following the trend started by Switchblade Jay White on discord among the factions, would challenge Okada for the IWGP Heavyweight belt at Sakura Genesis.

For anyone interested in the history of the Golden Lovers, Twitter user EffingBoring made a series of tweets detailing their humble beginnings until the present. Both Kenny Omega and New Japan approve of the tweets and are sharing them online.

Meanwhile back in WWE, Braun Strowman is assigned to serve as a substitute opponent for the Lesnar/Reigns match at Wrestlemania in the unlikely event one of them is a no-show. Big Show has also officially retired from wrestling as of yesterday now that his WWE contract expired. Show will continue to work with WWE from behind the scenes and doing special appearances a la Mark Henry.
