As to SSB, doubt it. A huge part ever since the Trunks saga was that Blue much less "higher levels" don't mean much anymore in terms of power. Trunks at still technically just SSJ2 surpassed SSB, and now we see others such as Piccolo and 17 have greatly increased in power over the years as well. Not to mention they've made it clear that power isn't everything inthe tournament.

A lot of DB groups I'm in are flipping their heads over the Power Scaling dilemma that DBS is showing ever since the Future Trunks arc. Their consensus is that since SSB allows Goku to have full control of his Ki, he can in turn adjust his power to match that of his opponent's. I find that bonkers since he can practically do that already in his base form, so there is no reason for him to go SSB just so he can lower it to match Krillin's. Furthermore, the current "Recruitment Arc" doesn't seem to be part of Toriyama's outline of DBS and is likely a Toei exclusive story before the tournament actually begins.

Right, it reminds me of before the Cell games when Goku and Gohan were training their ki control and stamina. They kept breaking stuff until they took better control of their powers, but they were finally able to get a handle on things.

The only thing I can think of now, is that they can still suppress their power to that degree, but the problem is that Goku for instance is many many many times more powerful than he was during Cell games. To keep that level of ki control, to go from super strong to super weak, SSB might be the key to that problem.

Not sure if you guys have heard it, but an interesting point of discussion floating around is the Water Tank theory, check it out sometime.

There's no real reason for it or theories for it. They flat out said it many times, and most recently in the Trunks arc when he outright asked why the hell Goku didn't go full power vs black. Vegetables told him that Goku has the bad habit of always holding back with lower levels to prolong the fight for the sake of his own amusement. As well as just to draw out a fight in general for air time purposes, Simple as that. Vegetables and Gohan also do the same some times. Trunks is pretty much the only character who goes full power right off the start , since he's not blinded by pride, self Indulgent, or looking for a good fight.

It adds to Goku''s character that he's a self-centered as hole who only fights for his own selfish reasons and personal intrist.

Wich was actually a reason Toriyama took Super hands on. He had no real involvement in Z, and always disliked how the siws staff tried to make Goku look like some heroic character.

Do not trust SSJ4Guy he does not understand how power scale works in the anime.

So the Tournament of Power started last weel and we finally see the rules of the game acting as a deterrent for Goku and Vegeta somewhat.

- Use of outside items and abilites not natural to the fighter are banned. So Senzu Beans and Fusion are not allowed. Whis pointed that because of this, Goku and Vegeta are forced to reserve their transformations as long as they can.

Despite the SSB form having more benefits than the regular SS forms, Whis pointed out a drawback in that it takes a lot out of his stamina. So Goku would need to conserve his strength until his eventual fight with the Pride Troopers.

- No Kill. Combatants can only be eliminated via Ring Out. Combine this with the above rule and guys like Botamo would be extremely hard to push out without Goku going in at full power. This is demonstrated with Goku fought a Universe 9 fighter that is impervious to melee attacks, and he and Vegeto's fight against the Trio de Dangers.

- No flying. Though there's a loophole somewhat in that the Z fighters can just use long leaps, which allowed Vegeta to do his combo attack in mid-air.

- A universe is erased when all 10 participants of their respective universe are eliminated. Only the angel of that universe is exempt from erasure. Some are saying this may be part of a much grander scehem by the angels and the Grand Priest, but nothing concrete to signify if this was made with malicious intent. Until now, we are given the impression that Kaioshin and above cannot change their alignment due to the critical roles they play (Beerus can't be evil and conquer/destroy all of Universe 7 as Whis keeps him in check, as well as the Kaioshin).

Also have to address last week's recycled use of animation. This isn't anything new in the animation industry overall, as recycling animation from previous episodes actually saves a lot in resources and time, as opposed to always drawing new animation every episode. Yes it makes the episode that used the practice less appealing, but given the current state of the anime industry with its animator shortage, practices such as this is an eventuality even with a large studio like Toei.

Toei also tends to be on the cheap end with animation, quite often we see drops in quality, especially in long running shonen shows like One Piece and Dragon Ball.

Toei likes to save the good animation teams for example that Golden freeza animation was done by Kyota Washikita who also has worked in Gundam shows. Toei has some good animation studios supporting and helping out in Dragon ball super because they don't want a repeat of the first 30 episodes..

That's not always a bad thing, the first five minutes of the Tournament, was just a bunch of pretty lights no characters just balls of lights and it was great and really well done.

Given that these are long running shows, gotta save budget by cutting back on animation, save it for the good stuff, namely the fights and even then, the important ones.

Explain Hunter x Hunter then. That series had near consistent animation despite having over 100 episodes.
