SRW Gaiden: The Lord of Elemental Commentary
Gadlight being pathetic overall is kind of the point of his character - he does recoup it slightly in Z3-2, although in a very Alpha 3-esqe situation, he never actually joins for good because he gets murdered to hype some of the antagonists.

Thank you for the exposition! I wonder if the three will get any new attacks in 3.2. I might look up the exclusive mook animations on YT. Mattman, you gotta tone down on the spoilers man lol.

Eh, I never did sympathize or was hyped when going up against Gadlight due to his incredibly dumb reasons for what he did. I also thought it was kind of lazy how Advent's Ascelpius wasn't all that different from the Chronos MP units.. but not as bad as Analotta. [I'm assuming Asakim is the representation of Pisces (Masaki) (?)]

[Saw Crowe's mook animations for Rengoku. Lol, talk about mook on crack. Someone on Banpresto must really like Setsuko.]

I have reached the end of the topic. *plants flag* Took me a little while, but I am all caught up. Tells me a lot about how long I have been absent that all of the Z games have summaries nowadays. *headscratch*

Super Robot Taisen Gaiden: Masou Kishin - The Lord of Elemental

  • Probably going to just go for one ultimate route. Flow chart looks like a mess at first but it's really not that complicated (?)
  • Million dollar question: Which one has the best story? (Or is canon?)
  • SNES Edition
  • Going to try out a new pattern - will have each post include two scenarios with three relevant screenshots. Looks clean and nice. Structure / Order is a beauty, ain't it?
  • No spoilers beyond my current progress, please. Cross-referencing is fine.
  • Going to add some of the portraits from the game in case anyone is curious of the varying character expressions. Will be updated from time to time.

Scenario 1: La Gias

All right boys and girls, it's that time again. Aeon Genesis with another phenomenal project. Props to him and those responsible. There's really something admirable and honorable when you see someone treat their craft well.

Damn, I haven't seen Masaki in ages. Last time I saw him and the La Gias crew was probably back when I last played Alpha Gaiden. Apparently this game takes place before SRW 2 and subsequently after the events of SRW 4 - both of which I never touched. Come to think of it, as much as I liked the La Gias crew in Alpha Gaiden, I barely knew their background. I don't even think Masaki mentions about his deceased(?) parents in OG 1 / 2 (GBA). I let Masaki gain a level and refused Feil's offer. Also, what's up with the random philosopher quote? How did they come across that particular guy?

Scenario 2: Red Devil
[Masaki lvl 2 ; "No can do" choice]

This feels like a cross between Front Mission and Escaflowne. We encounter Saphine - a Volkruss worshiper, a perverse one at that. Very short stage. IIRC, only 4 enemy units to get rid of. Shu probably will make an appearance soon. Gradually learning the mechanics of the game, since I've always been used to the more modern SRWs. I don't know what the Zone of Control system is about though. I'm assuming it means units can't move "through" you. The faq that I'm using admits it also doesn't know what it means, and it's from 1999! Damn, talk about old school.

Gaiden was a fun game, out of all the Classic games this one is my favourite.

Scenario 3: Nagzadd, the Cursed Spirit

We got another cultist fighting against us, going by the name of Luozorl. His full name is a handful - and he's super edgy. The Zamzeed and Granveil debuts in this stage as well. This is my first time seeing the original Zamzeed pilot. I guess we all know what that means if I didn't see him in Alpha Gaiden. (Or is Masaki & co. from Alpha timeline different than the one in the classic timeline?)

So far, all we know is that the bad guys are trying to resurrect Volkruss, an evil god.

Scenario 4: Elemental Lord

Tyutti is now able to pilot the Gaddess, the Water Elemental Lord. Three down, one to go - Granveil, Zamzeed, and Gaddess ; Cybaster. Luozorl crashes the party but retreats again.
Is it just me or is the difficulty toned down to negative eleven compared to SRW 3?

I think this game can be canon to all the games Masaki is in such as X and OE.

Game will get harder .

Scenario 5: Fear of Death

Masaki gets his first real kill in this stage. There will be plenty more buddy - and I ain't even including your kill count in other games you appear in. He gets over the guilt pretty quickly though, thankfully. Wimpy protagonists can ruin a game. Really quick stage. I suppose later stages will be longer?

Scenario 6: Pride and Prejudice
[Played Scenario: Red Devil]

Masaki wins a duel against his master, Zeolute. Not long after, edgelord Luozorl pops up again. Fang, another student of Zeolute shows up. He's got that SRW Neo hairstyle going on. Strange.. does he just highlight that specific part of his hair red? He's got something that resembles the Granveil! Probably its a bootleg version.

Fang shows up on the Lastoll rather than the Galguard in the intermission screen. Wtf? Must be a glitch or plot-related.

As thebigb said, this game (and its entire series, outside of 4) can be canon to pretty much all sagas and stand-alones
-before 2/after 4
-before Alpha/after Alpha Gaiden
-before OGs1/after OGs2/before Moon Dwellers (this is the only one where 4 can be canon)

The ZOC system makes it so that units can't move directly through the four squares directly adiacent to enemies units (and viceversa) in a single action, meaning that if you have a three square wide corridor and an enemy in the middle, like this

XOOOX
XOEOX
XOOOX
XOUOX
XOOOX

neither can move behind the other in a single turn, either one would be forced to stop at the sides of the other, while in a 5 squares wide one

XOOOOOX
XOOEOOX
XOOOOOX
XOOUOOX
XOOOOOX

one could move behind the other by moving seven squares in a turn (without ZOC it would be five in this situation); this can be used to control enemy placement/is used to make some situations more difficult, especially because in this series the direction you attack other units from does matter. If you ever make it to MK3 you will see hell because of it.

As for which route is the best and canon, well... no route exactly is, as 2 continues with events from both the first and the third route(good ending), and those are quite different. The second route, though, could be considered the bad ending of the entire game, and has elements that can't be reconciled with the rest of the series (or you could consider the game to have two main routes, with one having 3 different endings of which only one is fully good).

I'm actually quite tempted to try two of the routes. I'm trying to go for the rightmost route (with a certain somebody surviving) and if significant enough, the "left" route. Any ideas on what to title these "two" routes? I really hate the scenario design. Just when do they significantly diverge from one another in terms of story? Also, thanks for the heads up. No wonder the faq author didn't bother to explain lol.

Scenario 7: The Stolen Elemental Lord
["Stay some more" choice]

Saphine and Luozorl are up to their shenanigans again as the former runs off with Cybuster. Shit! Cenia joins us with the Nols Ray. For someone on the hero side, it's quite interesting to have an attack named "Evil Eyes". I wonder if there's a story to it.

Scenario 8: Cybuster

It's time. Masaki obtains his iconic mecha. We decide to tag along with Yang Long and chase after Saphine. First time seeing this rivalry dynamic between Masaki and Yang Long. I don't recollect seeing such in Alpha Gaiden, but then again, I haven't played AG in ages. Shu has yet to show up. He'll likely appear in some dramatic fashion and someone likely dying in the process. What a badass.
